The routes from Aaron’s home to his school are shown below.

What is the SHORTEST distance from Aaron’s home to his school?

9 km 623 m

Explanation

Only Flamingo Ave Route 1 = 4 1/8 km

Along Hibiscus Ave then Flamingo Ave Route 2 = 2 km 75 m +  2 km 48 m

We can ignore the third part of the route since that will be the same distance no matter which route is taken.

Route 2 = 4km 123 m

Convert Route 1 – 4 1/8 KM to KM and meters

1/8 x 1000 = 125 m

Since Route 2 = 4 km and 123 m

and Route 1 = 4 km and 125 m

Route 2 along Hibiscus Ave then Flamingo Ave will be shorter so now add that to 5½ km –

5½ km = 5 km and 500 m

Route 2 Full = 4 km 123 m + 5 km 500 m = 9 km 623 m
