Bursaries Awarded to 355 persons for 2021
Three hundred and fifty-five (355) nationals have been awarded bursaries under the National Bursaries Programme. These students are citizens of Trinidad and Tobago who completed CAPE Examinations in 2021. The Bursaries will provide tuition and compulsory fees, a book allowance and a monthly personal maintenance allowance at an estimated cost of TT$30,058,378.
The National Bursary Programme was launched by the Ministry of Education in November 2020 and provides an opportunity for five hundred (500) nationals to pursue tertiary education. This programme allows the means for ensuring that the most vulnerable groups, most talented students, and most targeted areas for national development are supported. The (355) awardees met the criteria of the National Bursary Means Test and were assessed and assigned scores based on their programme of study and its alignment to National Development, their involvement in extra-curricular activities, contribution to community, country and the quality and content of their Purpose Statement.
The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, through the Ministry of Education, is focused on transforming the education system to allow for access to learning for all. According to Education Minister, Dr. the Hon. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, ”the National Bursary programmme has expanded access to tertiary education from 400 students to 600 students. Through the award of scholarships and national bursaries we now have a more strategic rationalization of funding mechanisms, and we can ensure that the well-performing and talented students have access to higher education, regardless of their socio-economic background.”
Successful candidates will be required to sign an agreement of obligatory service to the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The Ministry of Education congratulates and wishes these students success in their new journey in tertiary education.
The bursary will comprise of the following payments
- Medical scholars – A book allowance of $9,711 as first time payment and thereafter $5,711 payment annually.
- Non-medical – A book allowance of $8,062 as first time payment and thereafter $4,062 payment annually.
- A personal maintenance allowance of $3,043.00 per month, payable per quarter of the fiscal year (Dec, March, June and September)
- 100% GATE funding for study at local institutions
- Regional study will be subject to the prevailing guidelines and funding levels for all GATE recipients.
