Math 2017 Question 41
Question 41
Five runners competed in a race on sports day. The table below shows the times recorded for 4 runners.
(a) Calculate the average running time for the FOUR given runners. (2 marks)
(b) Javed won the race by 0.3 seconds. What was his winning time? (1 mark)
(c) The winning time in last year’s race was 16.3 seconds. What is the least amount of time by which Mark must improve to beat last year’s winning time? (2 marks)
Answer
(a) 17 seconds
(b) 16.2 seconds
(c) 1.6 seconds
Explanation
(a) Average of the four runners =Sum of the times ÷ Number of runners
Average of the four runners = ( 16.5 + 17.8 + 16.9 + 16.8 ) ÷ 4 = 68 ÷ 4 = 17 seconds
(b)Javed’s winning by 0.3 seconds: 16.5 – 0.3 = 16.2 seconds
(c) Mark must improve by at least : 17.8 – 16.2 = 1.6 seconds
Wouldn’t the answer to part c be 1.5 seconds as last year’s winning time was 16.3 seconds? (17.8 – 16.3= 1.5)
Denille, I wondered if that was what they meant the answer to be but if he improved by 1.5 wouldn’t they tie and he wouldn’t win?? I actually wasn’t sure which one they wanted.
Part c is 1. 5 you are suppose to subtract. by 16. 3 you subtract By 16. 2
Got it…guess I was too tired at the time to realize
