Question 42

There are 450 mangoes and oranges in a fruit stall. There are twice as many mangoes as there are oranges.
(a) How many oranges are in the stall? (1 mark)

(b) 2/3 of the oranges are green and the others are ripe.
How many oranges are ripe? (2 marks)

(c) A box can hold 24 mangoes. How many boxes are needed to pack ALL the mangoes? (2 marks)

Answer

(a) 150 oranges

(b) 50 oranges

(c) 13 boxes

Explanation

(a) Let oranges = R and M = Mangoes

2 R = M

Therefore 2R + R = 450

3R = 450

R = 450Ā Ć·3 = 150

There are 150 oranges and 300 mangoes

(b) 2/3 oranges are green therefore 1/3 of oranges are ripe

Number ripe = 150Ā Ć—1/3 = 50 oranges

(c) There are 300 mangoes

If a box can hold 24 mangoes then number of boxes needed are

300Ā Ć·24 rounded up to the next whole number

300Ā Ć·24 = 12Ā½

Therefore 13 boxes are needed
