Question 35

Wendy has 10kg of flour. She uses 2 kg 675 g to make a batch of bread and 1 kg 970 g to make a batch of cakes
(a) How much flour does Wendy use altogether? (1 mark)

(b) How much flour does she have remaining? (1 mark)

(c) How many batches of cake can Wendy make with the remaining flour? (1 mark)

Answer

(a) 4 kg 645 g

(b) 5 kg 355 g

(c) She can only make 2 batches of cake

Explanation

(a) Flour altogether = 2kg 675g + 1 kg 970 g

2kg + 1 kg = 3 kg

675 g + 970 g = 1645 g = 1 kg and 645 g

Flour altogether = 3kg + 1 kg and 645 g = 4 kg 645 g

(b) Flour remaining = 10 kg  – 4 kg 645 g = 5 kg 355 g

(c) To make cake = 1 kg 970 g

Two cakes = 1 kg 970 g + 1 kg 970 g = 3 kg 940 g

Three cakes = 3 kg 940 g + 1 kg 970 g = 5 kg 910g

Therefore she can only make 2 batches of cake.
