In a news conference carried online on Sunday 17th October, the Chairman of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and the CEO and Registrar of CXC, Dr. Wayne Wesley outlined new and revised approaches to address some of the issues raised by the 2020 CAPE and CSEC results. These approaches are pending release of the full report of an independent investigative committee report to be released during the week.

CXC outlined a number of actions to be taken in light of the issues identified after the recent July 2020 CSEC and CAPE exams:

  • Results of an independent investigative committee, will be shared with Caribbean Education Ministries on Monday 19th October. A summary of the Investigative Report will be shared to the public on Tuesday 20th October.
  • The deadline for registration January 2021 exams has been extended to November 13th, 2020.
  • Once a review is requested by a student, the multiple choice and the SBA will be reviewed for any data/marking errors.
  • SBA issues/variances will be addressed via workshops with teachers in the region. It was indicated that final SBA’s results for 2020 were 66% in line with school SBA markings as opposed to 63% previous year, 2019.
  • CXC has indicated that they will not release raw scores as the organisation grades using profiles. They also indicated that the syllabus spells out the distribution of the profile areas in terms of weighting. They indicated they will create and release an online video, to illustrate to the public.
  • Other recommendations for mid term and long term time frames are to be implemented in the coming months.

Review

  • The deadline for querying and review of grades has been extended to November 6th, 2020.
  • The review fee has been reduced by half to $15US OR $30BDS, and for those who have already submitted/paid, the excess will be refunded.
  • If the grade remains the same as original awarded grade, the candidate will be advised. If the reviewed grade improves then the fee will be refunded.
  • The “Decrease in Grade policy”, where a student could have received a lower grade after a review, will be discontinued for this 2020 session.
  • More resources will be put in place by CXC and the backlog of queries will be cleared by this week.
  • Provisions are to be put in place by end of this week to interact with CXC online to request for review and return of results. Students will therefore, not necessarily have to go through their local registrar in all situations.
