Trinidad and Tobago – National Flag

4/5 - (1 vote)

The National Flag of Trinidad and Tobago was designed by Carlisle Chang and chosen by the Independence Committee of 1962.

The three colours each have a different significance. Each colour represents a physical element as well a characteristic of our people.

Red

Represents the sun in our tropical country The red represents the courage and energy of our people. The element Fire.

White

Represents water surrounding our island. White also represents the purity and equality of our people. Our country is made up of different peoples and we are all equal. The element Water.

Black

Represents the land and some say the oil which is one of our major natural resources. Black also represents the dedication of our people. The element Earth.

The official documentation on the flag  from 1962 reads:

The Black represents for us the dedication of the people joined together by one strong bond. It is the colour of strength, of unity of purpose, and of the wealth of the land.
Red is the colour most expressive of our country. It represents the vitality of the land and its peoples, it is the warmth and energy of the sun, the courage and friendliness of the people.
White is the sea by which these lands are bound, the cradle of our heritage, the purity of our aspirations and the equality of all men under the sun.
