Question 46

The table below shows the marks obtained by 2 students in 5 subjects.

(a) Calculate the mean mark obtained by Yvette. (1 mark)
(b) How many marks did Barry score in Music? (1 mark)
(c) A mean of 55 is required to get a Grade C. How many MORE marks did Barry need in order to get a grade C? (2 marks)
(d) Yvette needed 20 MORE marks to get a Grade B. What is the least amount of marks required to get a Grade B? (1 mark)

Answer

(a) 68

(b) 31

(c) 35

(d) 75

Explanation

(a) Mean Mark Yvette = Sum of all the marks ÷ Number of subjects

Mean Mark Yvette = (75+60+70+80+55)÷5 = 340÷5 = 68

(b) Total Barry = 63+74+Music+47+25 = 240

Total Barry  = 209+Music = 240

Music = 240-209 = 31

(c) Mean of 55 therefore total = 55 x 5 = 275

Barry needed more =  275-240 = 35

(d) I had a question on this because I am not sure if the additional marks is from the average or the sum.

If it is the average then it is just 55+20 = 75

OR If it is the the sum then 340 + 20 = 360 then 360 ÷5 = 72

Additional Note: I am not too sure which one they meant in the question. If it was additional marks of the sum OR additional marks of the average? If I was in the exam I would put 75 as the answer since it is just one mark. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Please put your thoughts in the comments below.

Since the previous parts refer to marks and not to the average I would go with increasing the marks by 20 then finding the average. Answer 72

i would go with the mean average since grades are based on the mean so 55 plus 20 is my rationale
